When plex.tv/link is not working, it usually comes down to a few simple problems: an expired code, a typo, a browser issue, or a network hiccup. The good news is that most of these are easy to fix in just a few minutes. In this guide, we walk through the most common reasons the Plex TV activation page fails and the exact steps to get your device linked so you can start streaming.
The official activation page is https://www.plex.tv/link (also reachable at plex.tv/link). You must open it on a phone, tablet, or computer while the Plex app on your TV displays the 4-character link code.

Quick fix lookup table

Expired or single-use codes

Plex link codes are temporary and expire after a short time. Each code also works only once. If you take too long to switch from the TV to your browser, the code can become invalid before you finish typing it. This is one of the most common reasons people think plex.tv/link is not working when the page itself is fine.
1

Go back to the Plex app on your TV

Navigate to the Sign In screen and choose the activation option if it is not already showing a code.
2

Request a new code

Wait for a fresh 4-character code to appear.
3

Switch to your browser immediately

Open plex.tv/link, sign in, and enter the code within a minute or two.

Typos and look-alike characters

TV screens sometimes use fonts that make certain numbers and letters look alike. Mixing these up is the fastest way to get an “invalid” response.
  • 0 (zero) versus O (letter O)
  • 1 (one) versus I (capital i)
  • 5 (five) versus S (capital s)
If you are unsure about a character, try replacing it with the alternate option. If that does not work, the safest move is to generate a new code.

Signed into the wrong Plex account in the browser

Plex codes are tied to the account that is signed in on the browser at plex.tv/link. If you sign in with one account in the browser but want to use a different account on the TV, the TV may link to the wrong profile or show no content.
1

Open plex.tv/link

Confirm which email/username is signed in at the top-right of the page.
2

Sign out if needed

Choose Sign Out and sign back in with the correct Plex account email and password, or use Google, Apple, or Facebook if that is how that account was created.
3

Enter the fresh TV code

Submit the code and watch the TV app for the “signed in” confirmation.

Browser and network issues

Ad blockers, privacy extensions, and overly aggressive cookie blockers can interfere with the request that links your TV to your Plex account. VPNs and DNS filters can also break the connection between the browser and Plex’s servers.
A fast way to rule out browser issues is to open a private or incognito window with all extensions disabled, navigate to plex.tv/link, sign in, and enter the code.
If that works, clear cookies and cache for plex.tv in your normal browser, or add the site to your ad blocker’s allowlist.

Weak internet on the TV or streaming device

Your phone or computer may have a strong Wi-Fi signal, but the TV or streaming stick might not. If the TV cannot talk to Plex’s servers reliably, it may show a code but never complete the handshake after you submit it.
  • Move the TV or router closer together, or use a wired connection if available.
  • Restart the TV and router to clear temporary network glitches.
  • Check that the TV’s date and time are set correctly; mismatched times can cause SSL and server handshake failures.

Plex app is outdated

An older version of the Plex app may use an outdated activation flow or fail to receive the final sign-in signal from Plex’s servers.
1

Open your device's app store

Go to the Roku Channel Store, Amazon Appstore, Apple App Store, Google Play, Samsung Apps, LG Content Store, or Microsoft/PlayStation store depending on your device.
2

Search for Plex

If an update is available, install it.
3

Restart the app and request a new code

Retry the activation process.

What to do when the code is accepted but the TV does not sign in

This situation is frustrating because the browser says the code was accepted, yet the TV app stays on the Sign In screen. There are a few things to check.

The wrong account was linked

Double-check the account signed in on plex.tv/link. If that account does not have access to the server you expected, it will look like nothing happened even though the link technically succeeded.

Server is offline or not shared

Linked devices can only see servers that are online and shared with their account. Make sure the Plex Media Server is running on the host computer or NAS, and that the linked account has been invited to that server. If you are using a managed user inside Plex Home, make sure the main account owner has set that user up correctly and that managed users are allowed on the device.

Restart the TV app

Force-close the Plex app, reopen it, and wait up to 30 seconds. The sign-in status may sync on launch. If it does not, remove the device from your authorized device list and retry.

Platform-specific notes

Most activation issues are the same across devices, but a few platforms have quirks worth knowing.
  • Roku: If the Plex app is installed from the Roku Channel Store but was never launched before, the first launch may take a moment to initialize before showing a code. Restart the app if the screen is blank.
  • Fire TV / Amazon Fire Sticks: Clearing the app cache (Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Plex > Clear cache) can fix stale states without losing your library.
  • Apple TV (tvOS): If you see a QR code option instead of a 4-character code, scanning the QR with your phone can be faster than typing at plex.tv/link.
  • Samsung / LG smart TVs: These apps run on Tizen and webOS. If the app freezes on the code screen, press the Home button, force-close Plex, and reopen it.
  • Xbox / PlayStation: Console network modes (Strict NAT) can delay the sign-in confirmation. Make sure the console has an open or moderate NAT type.

Frequently asked questions

The device is successfully linked to your account, but the server itself may be offline, or your account may not have access to it. Ask the server owner to confirm the server is running and that your email is invited. Also check that you linked the correct account.
